How to talk to an audition pianist
This document was developed for a workshop I led for UB’s “BTW” series to prepare students for upcoming production auditions. It picks up after the music has been chosen: how to prepare the score, what to tell (and not tell) the pianist, and other thoughts. It is very much based on my personal opinions, but I hope it’s helpful all the same.
The anthem in all twelve keys
I’m fortunate to play for commencement ceremonies at UB every year which include the national anthem. Can I play it by ear? Sure. In front of 6,000 people at 9 AM? Nope. Every year it’s a struggle to find the score in the key that I need. This is a standard, no-nonsense arrangement that’s already transposed and in one place.
